On Prayer line Wednesday night, the following verses from Isaiah 55 were mentioned.

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
    and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
    giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
    it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
    and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

As much as the last week as been very uncharacteristic for those of us who live in the Mid-Atlantic region, the snow that has fallen and remains is very important in the refreshing and watering the earth. Water is extremely important to the sustenance of life. Without it, everything would die because of dehydration.

In scripture water, plays a very important role in both the natural and the spiritual. Water is a powerful and multi-dimensional theme, appearing more than 500 times from the opening verses of Genesis to the final chapter of Revelation. It is portrayed as a tool of creation, a means of judgment, and a profound symbol of spiritual life. Beyond its physical form, water represents spiritual renewal and the Holy Spirit.

Living Water: Jesus famously used this metaphor with the Samaritan woman in John 4:10-14, offering "living water" that becomes a spring welling up to eternal life.

Cleansing and Baptism: Water is the essential element of baptism, representing a believer's death to sin and resurrection to new life (Romans 6:4).

But perhaps most importantly, water represents the word of God. "Watering of the word" refers to the biblical concept, primarily from Ephesians 5:24-26,

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

 Like a husband, Christ cleanses and sanctifies the Church through the "washing of water by the Word", symbolizing spiritual purification, renewal, and guidance from God's Word (Scripture) by the Holy Spirit. Much like water cleanses the body. It means actively engaging with Scripture (reading, meditating, speaking) to wash away sin, doubt, and negative thoughts, fostering spiritual growth, a clean conscience and a closer relationship with the Lord.

The end result is that the watering of the word will accomplish exactly what it was sent out to do. In the natural, that means complete maturity of the thing the water was sent to nourish. In the Spirit, the end result is maturity in Christ.

The promise is that God will accomplish all that it is supposed to accomplish.

As much as it frustrating to deal with all the snow and ice in the natural, may it remind us of its importance to water the earth. Lack of reading and meditating on the word of God, brings spiritual death. Allow the scriptures and prophetic words spoken over you bring a refreshing and a watering to you soul knowing that it cannot stop you from being a mature follower of the Lord Jesus.
