There is no underestimating the power and influence of a Godly mother. The Apostle Paul illustrates this importance in the life of Timothy, a young pastor of the church of Ephesus in 2 Timothy 1:5
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.
Timothy learned His devotion to Jesus through the devotion he saw exampled by both his mother and grandmother. Lois (grandmother) and Eunice (mother) were devout Jewish-Christian women mentioned in 2 Timothy 1:5 as the foundational influencers of Timothy’s "sincere faith". They resided in Lystra and raised Timothy in the Scriptures despite him being from a religiously mixed home, as his father was a Greek pagan. They likely accepted Christianity during Paul's ministry. The Apostle Paul was well aware of the influence that they had on young Timothy’s life.
Timothy was chosen as the first pastor in the church of Ephesus, perhaps the most powerful and effective church in the first century of the church.
Key Details About Timothy's Mother and Grandmother:
Faithful Mentorship: Lois and Eunice taught Timothy the sacred scriptures from a young age (2 Timothy 3:15). Their teaching of the Old Testament prepared him for faith in Christ Jesus.
Generational Faith: Paul notes that the faith now in Timothy first dwelt in Lois, then passed to Eunice, and finally to Timothy.
"Unequally Yoked" Situation: Eunice was a Jewish believer married to a Greek, which is likely why Timothy was not circumcised as a child. Despite the potential challenges of a split-faith home, they ensured Timothy received a strong spiritual upbringing.
Legacy: Their dedication allowed Timothy to become a trusted, faithful companion of the Apostle Paul.
Lois: Recognized as a grandmother (Greek: mamme), a rare mention in the New Testament.
Eunice: Identified as a Jewish woman who believed in Christ (Acts 16:1
The influence of a mother on her children is profound, often described as "beyond calculation," shaping their character, emotional health, and worldview. Mothers act as primary educators and emotional pillars, instilling values like kindness, hard work, and faith while providing the secure attachment necessary for cognitive and social development.
However, It is not enough that mothers just teach their children the importance of navigating life through secular education. They must be influential to introduce their children the importance of a relationship with Jesus. They must recognize that their children are not their own but are given to them by God to raise in the fear and love of the Lord.
A godly mother is often described as a woman who reflects the heart of Christ to her children, viewing her role as a sacred stewardship to raise disciples for God's kingdom. She is characterized not by perfection, but by a consistent pursuit of God through prayer, Scripture, and intentional obedience.
I was blessed to have 2 godly grandmothers and a very godly mother. They weren’t perfect by any stretch but there was never any doubt of their love and devotion to the Lord, their husbands and their children and grandchildren. I know it was their prayers that protected me in times of danger and got me through some tough times as I was making my faith my own. Then the Lord gave me a wonderful mother-in-law who showed her love for the Lord by the level and serving and caring for others. I loved her as my own mother. She was a wonderful, godly women who prayers for all her 4 children and their spouses as her own children. She was the best and I miss her so.
Interesting that it was the women who followed Jesus who never deserted Him at his arrest, scourging, crucifixion and burial. They were the first to arrive at the empty tomb and the first to see the risen Lord. That shows the faithfulness and love that mothers have for their children no matter how young or old. We even see this in nature. Mothers will sacrifice their own lives for the lives of their offspring,
What a wonderful heritage the Lord has given many of us through our godly mothers and grandmothers. On this Mother’s Day 2026, we want to bless all of our Mom’s with a wonderful day of tribute and thank God for all of your love and sacrifice. May you know that you are deeply important in our lives and may Jesus bless you abundantly on this special day.
